The Decalogue: Two Tablets for Every Day
Series: Year Of The Message
The Ten Commandments are a foundation for any civil society. They require humility toward God and our fellow man. They teach restraint, love, and unselfish service. The first and the tenth are troublesome. How are you doing on having no other gods? How about not coveting? If we read them as Jesus taught us to read them, these commandments are essentially about attitudes and dispositions of the heart.
Moses & the Exodus: Out of the Frying Pan
Series: Year Of The Message
God chooses another man, Moses. He is to go to the Hebrew slaves. God often chooses unlikely leaders, and he does so for his own purposes and his own glory. Moses was a reluctant recruit, as many of us are. But even though he lacked some important qualities, God lifted him to the highest point of the Old Covenant.
Abraham & the Patriarchs:The Call of God
Series: Year Of The Message
God chooses man, a family, and a nation to be ambassadors of his grace in the earth. Through them God promises to bless all people. Abraham hears the call of God to leave his homeland and make a journey to an unknown place. He responds in faith to this mysterious directive from an unseen God. Faith is revealed to be the bedrock for any relationship with God. In order to be right with God, a person must choose and walk in faith. Faith is essential to the covenant God makes with a man.
Creation & the Fall: From Very Good to What a Mess
Series: Year Of The Message
God made the world and everything in it, including humans, and it was all "very good." God put humans in charge of the earth to tend it and keep it. One command of a negative nature was issued: don't eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Adam and Eve fell to temptation and ate the forbidden fruit. Everything changed. They were driven from the garden. Murder and mayhem emerged. God had a plan, even in the first pages of the Bible, for the restoration of sinful humans. Redemption begins.
